PENANG, 21 Dec – Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) emerged as the first public university to win a ticket to compete at the Premier League, the second-highest in the national football competition after the Super League.

USM selection to the premier League through the USM Staff Football Club (KBSSUSM) was based on its excellent performance in the FAM League last season when it was ranked third after Pos Malaysia and Tambun Tulang.

Team manager, Mohd. Azizudin Mohd. Shariff said that KBSSUSM’s selection together with 11 other teams to the premier League next season was not anticipated.

He said that when KBSSUSM was selected by the Football Association of Penang to participate in the FAM League last season, it wanted to do its best in view of the fact that opportunities like this were hard to come by.

“However, once we got into action, our players gained confidence and at the end of the competition, we were in the top three of the league. Following this, we were given the opportunity to participate in the Premier League next season. KBSSUSM will continue to be committed in giving a high-qualityperformance like the other teams,” he said in an interview at USM recently.

USM together with 11 other teams will participate in 22 matches in the Premier League and is also listed to play in the FA Cup which is scheduled to commence play early next year.

The players representing KBSSUSM include several ex-Penang Super League players like Nor Affendi Md. Yatim and Amirul Omar, ex-captain M. Prakash and top scorer in the FAM League for USM, Mohamad Baser Mahamad Napae.

KBSSUSM will be captained by S. Veloo, former Penang coach and will be helped by two assistant coaches, that is, Rosli Ali and K. Ramajayam.

The first match in the Premier League between KBSSUSM and Pos Malaysia is scheduled for 11 January 2010 at the Penang Council Stadium (subject to FAM amendments).

Other teams participating in the Premier League include Sabah, Sarawak, Melaka, Felda United, Malaysian Armed Forces, Royal Malaysian Police, Kuantan Port and others.
