USM FC set to create history

The Star 6 January 2010

GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) are set to write a new chapter in Malaysian football history by being the first public higher learning institution to compete in the Premier League.

The USM vice-chancellor, Prof Tan Sri Dzulkifli Abdul Razak, said that this was part of the university’s efforts to promote sports in the campus.

“It is an historical moment for us as we are the first public university to compete in the league and will host our home games at the university too,” he said after meeting the players here yesterday.

He added that the team, under the charge of former Penang chief coach S. Veloo, had been preparing for the competition since the end of last year with a number of players from various teams, among them Kedah, Penang and Kelantan.

However, team manager Mohd Azizudin Mohd Shariff said that as the rookie team in the league, they had set a modest target in the competition, which begins on Monday.

”Our target is to remain in the league as we are optimistic that the physical and mental strength of the USM team can compete against the rest of the teams in the competition,” he said. — Bernama
